Pessimism is setting in about the planned talks in Moscow on June 18-19 between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (the US, the UK, France, Russia, China) and Germany, otherwise known as P5+1. Yet, it is imperative that the negotiations do not collapse.

On April 27, the Los Angeles Times, quoting an unidentified American official, reported that the US is ready for a deal with Iran to enrich uranium up to 5% "if its government agrees to the unrestricted inspections, strict oversight and numerous safeguards that the United Nations has long demanded".

As the May 23 meeting between Iran and the P5+1 over Iran's nuclear impasse approaches, the factional infighting in Tehran becomes more apparent and it can potentially block any agreement. The story began with publication of a front page article in the Iran newspaper on May 2, entitled "deceptive operations."

The noticeable pressure on Iran, on the one hand, and the arrival of the time for a war or peace decision for the US, on the other hand, is making the two sides come to the negotiation table with a new willingness for a compromise resolution.

On March 4, at the conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the all-powerful Israeli lobby in the US, President Obama warned against "too much loose talk of war". This was a clear objection to Israel's sharpened rhetoric against Iran in the last few months.

Murdering Iranian scientists has become a disturbing pattern of "covert actions" against Iran, which has taken the lives of at least four scientists since 2010. The Iranian community and all who support peace, human rights and international law must take action to express their outrage at these acts of violence. They must also demand that these murders be stopped and the perpetrators brought to justice!

It is with deepest regret and sorrow that the American-Iranian Council (AIC) announces the passing of Ambassador Sargent Shriver, a member of the Council's Honorary Board of Directors. The late Shriver joined AIC in 1999 at the invitation of his legendary friend, the late Cyrus Vance, who served as the Council's Honorary Chairman.
